The Whiz Kid Speaks:

The Samsung SGH-T119 is basic handset that features voice memo, voice mail, and support for Java applications.

1.6-inch display is based on 65K CSTN technology to support 65,000 colors. Its resolution is 128×128 pixels.

The messaging features include text and multimedia messages, instant messaging, and Web-based email.

Razzle Dazzle:

The Samsung SGH-T119 is 4.13 inches tall, 1.76 inches wide, and 0.56 inch deep and weighs 2.74 ounces. The handset has a basic black rectangular shape with sharp corners and straight lines.

Inside Dope:

The Samsung SGH-T119 for T-Mobile has a traditional candy-bar design and low-profile just for making calls. It does not match the T-Mobile Shadow (2nd version) and Motorola Renew W233. The T119 features acceptable call quality and functional feature set. However, it lacks dedicated clear key and volume rockers. Its plastic casing gives a cheap feeling. If you are looking for an entry-level handset with camera and Bluetooth, then you have to look elsewhere.

Samsung SGH-T119 review

1.6 inches display of the Samsung SGH-T119 has 128×128 pixels resolution that supports 65,000 colors. You cannot expect sharp graphics from such a low-resolution display. You can customize the contrast, backlight and font style, color, and size. We like the intuitive and simple icon based menu interface.

The navigation array sits beneath the display and consists of two soft keys, Talk button, four-way toggle with middle OK button, and Power/End button. You can customize the four directions of the toggle with shortcuts. We do not like that the Samsung SGH-T119 lacks dedicated speakerphone and back/clear key. However, the navigation array is tactile and spacious. The alphanumeric keypad also has roomy and tactile buttons, but its keys are stiff.

You will find the combined headset jack/charger port at the left spine. We will prefer to have a standard 3.5mm headset jack, but this does not matter to a low-profile phone. What’s more – you can use the array buttons to adjust the volume during call.

The Samsung SGH-T119 can store 300 contacts in its phonebook. Each entry can save four phone numbers, notes, and one email address. You can organize the callers into groups and pair them with one ring-tone. The cell phone support picture caller ID, but there is no camera.

The essential feature set includes a tip calculator, a stopwatch, a timer, a unit and currency converter, a world clock, a calculator, a task list, a calendar, text and multimedia messages, and an alarm clock. The additional highlights are voice memo recorder, speakerphone, and T-Mobile contact synchronization.

The Samsung SGH-T119 can be personalized with available wallpapers, greetings, and background colors. The handset does not come with any games. We like that you can set the recorded sounds as the ring-tones. More ring-tones and options can be downloaded from T-Mobile t-zone service.

Noteworthy that the SGH-T119 handset does not outside North America as it supports dual-band of GSM 850/1900.

We made few calls through the Samsung SGH-T119 via T-Mobile for testing. The overall call quality was good. We received clear and loud sound without any interference and static. The callers also received loud sound at their end, but they heard background noise on picking up the phone. The speakerphone call quality was good with loud and clear volume, but it required speaking very closely with the phone.

The Samsung SGH-T119 has a battery life of 16.6 days idle standby time and 7 hours of talk time. Its digital SAR is 0.958watt per kg in accordance with FCC radiation tests.

Nitty Gritty:

If you need a low-profile handset only for making calls without camera and Bluetooth, then purchase – the Samsung SGH-T119. Please remember that this handset does not have dedicated Clear/Back key and volume rocker.
